    Finfish mariculture in India

    Get PDF
Information on seed resources of cultivable marine finfishes along the Indian coast and their culture potential in ponds, pens, net enclosures and cages is given. The available cultivable areas, methods and management techniques for mariculturc of finfishes in India arc presented. The prospects for development of fish farms, cages, pens, and net enclosures are highlighted. The progress ofmarieulture of finfishes in other countries for sustainable development is also discussed

    Pesticides pollution in marine environment

    Get PDF
A number of pesticides are used in India and demand for them is on increase. It is estimated that there is a 15% increase in the consumption of pesticides every year throughout the world. During the last ten years, the use of DDT alone in India has increased nearly four folds. It is estimated that DDT and BHe requirements during 1985-86 would be about twenty thousand tonnes and ten thousand tonnes respectively, twice the present requirement

Heavy metals pollution in the marine environment

    Get PDF
In recent years, pollution of marine environment by heavy metals has become a national and international problem. The current alarm about metal pollution in the sea however started with the tragedy of'Minimata' disease caused by the consumption of mercury-contamifrom nated shellfish and fin fish taken from Minimata Bay in Japan

Ocean-a solution for India and the World

    Get PDF
The World's ocean produce about 80 % of all proteins, yet So far man is using only an insignificant part of these riches.. In recent years marine biology and oceanography, the sciences w.hich help man to tap the wealth of this living treasure store in the most effective manner by turning the seas and oceans into a gigantic laboratory. Because of the world-wide continuity of tbe oceans and their conditions, International collaboration Is essential So that comparative studies may he made on a broad geographical scale. Collaboration is desirable, also in order to achieve an adequate research effort on selected basic problems

A short note of the Biometry of Nemipterus japonicus (Bloch) in Relation to Sex in Porto-Novo waters

    Get PDF
The secondary sexual characters are present mostly in the animals of higher order; exceptionally this can be traceable to Nemipterus japonicus (Bloch), a bony fish belonging to Nemipteridae family of order Perciforme

    Pilot whales caught at Pudukuppam

    Get PDF
Two female pilot whales of the species Globicephala macrorhynca Gray) measuring 302 cm and 140 cm respectively were caught in gill nets during fishing operation at Pudukuppam fish landing centre near Cuddalore on 29 July

Blood Sugar Estimation in the Estuarine Crab Scylla serrata (Forskal)

    Get PDF
The sugar in the blood of crustacea represents an energy source for tissue metabolism as is the rule in other animals. The wide range of composition of blood values obtained for reducing substances in crustacean blood suggest that the physiological condition of the animal influences-the- 'blood sugar values'

    Environmental controls for induced maturation

    Get PDF
Reproduction in cultured finfishes is usually restricted to a specific period of the year when erivironmental conditions are favourable, the success of marine and brackishwater finfish breeding primarily depends on the availability of heaIthy breeders in sufficient numbers for use in induced breeding and thereby leading to large scale seed production in India, in order to meet the growing demand for the seed of cultivable marine and brackishwater finfish for aquaculture practices, mass production of seed by induced bre6ding is an essential prerequisite. It is imperative to maintain brood stocks in an environment which is conducive to them and one that promotes gonada1 maturation. Many of the maj or current problems in marine and brackishwater fihfish breeding relate to nutrition, reproduction and environmental requirements and hence the need for better understanding and control of these factors (Lam, 1983

Seed production and commercial culture of the seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch) at Singapore and its lessons for India

    Get PDF
The "Seabass" or the "Giant perch", Lates calcarifer is of prime quality value fish in whichever locality it occurs. That artificial production of its seeds is possible has been proved in Thailand by collecting spawners from the wild. This is followed by breeding the fish in tanks under captivity and production of the first batch of induced-bred fry there in 1973. Since artificial seed production and intensive culture of the Seabass are yet to be realised in India, the salient features of these aspects observed at Singapore are presented in this paper. It is possible to develop induced breeding and seed production inIndia. The availability of trash fish such as sardines, silver bellies and sciaenids in order to feed the stocked material appears to be quite good in Indi
